Enable – Rowing Coach & Boathouse Assistant

We are looking for an experienced and enthusiastic Rowing Coach to join our Leisure team at Barn Elms Boathouse!

Role Overview:

This role will be responsible for coaching a variety of adult and junior community rowing sessions, as well as assisting with the fleet and facility maintenance of the boathouse at Barn Elms.   This post is suited to someone who is passionate about rowing, and has experience coaching people of different ages and abilities, increasing participation and developing pathways for talented athletes to flourish.

Main Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Assist the boatman with fleet maintenance.
  • Maintain equipment service records.
  • Responsible for the maintenance and upkeeping indoor rowing tank.
  • Responsible for the upkeep and servicing (outsourced) of concept 2 rowing machines.
  • Assist with facility management including health & safety checks.
  • Coach a variety of indoor and river-based sessions including adult and junior beginners, recreational adults, school sessions and junior competitive squad.
  • Plan sessions to meet the level and aims of the rowers.
  • Maintain records of attendance.
  • Monitor and report on individual rowers’ progress.
  • Deliver scheduled sessions and courses showing a clear developmental progression plan where required.

Person Specification:

  • An understanding and awareness health and safety implications of rowing and coaching on the Tideway.
  • Knowledge of rowing and sculling technique.
  • Experience of coaching small groups through to larger numbers of varied ability.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to converse with key people (including colleagues, young people, other organisations and the general public) using a range of methods, including: oral, written, telephone and in meetings.
  • Strong IT and web-based skills, with experience of using Microsoft Office (Word, Excel and PowerPoint) and any other relevant IT-based programmes.
  • Ability to work alone and effectively prioritise workload to meet the demands of the job in a timely manner.
  • Be able to manage behaviour to ensure sessions are enjoyable and inclusive.
  • A knowledge and understanding of safeguarding vulnerable adults and young people and its relevance to the role of a Rowing Coach,
  • Be able to demonstrate integrity at all times and a willingness to attend training as required.
  • Have a good understanding of fleet maintenance and relevant practical skills.
  • Holds a level 2 NGB qualification in rowing, or working towards.
  • Hold a Level 2 RYA powerboat qualification (desired, not essential).
  • Able to work flexible hours including evenings and weekends, when required

Salary: £33,536 pro rated

Type: Part time - 15 hours per week
