Gravesend Rowing Club – Volunteer senior squad coach
Gravesend Rowing Club is seeking a volunteer coach to lead their senior squads.
Gravesend Rowing Club is a small but friendly rowing club based on the Thames in Kent. Our senior squads have been growing in recent years, with success at local and regional races. The successful candidate will help the Club continue to develop its performance alongside our small coaching team, with a focus on development of the senior men and women squads.
Due to the nature of the water at Gravesend, and restrictions on night time rowing, we have a significant inside training area including a large ergo space, gym, and spin bikes as well as a growing fleet of boats. The senior coach would therefore be required to lead both indoor and outdoor sessions (although would not necessarily need to attend all indoor sessions).
Core aspects of the role would include:
- Support the coaching team with development of a training plan for both land and water sessions.
- Crew selection.
- Work with the Captain and coaches to develop overarching Club objectives, and ensure alignment of the senior plan with these objectives and those of the development squad.
- Provide feedback to squad members to support them in their personal development.
- Lead at least one on-water session per week (we may be able to be flexible with these timings):
– Sunday mornings 8am to 10am, then 10am to 12noon
– Thursday evenings 6pm to 8pm (indoors when after sunset)
-Tuesday evenings 6pm to 8pm (indoors when after sunset – these sessions are combined with the development squad)
What we are looking for
- Experience successfully coaching both sweep and scull crews
- Availability to attend at least one on-water session per week, in addition to development of plans for other sessions
- Willingness to work with our existing coaches and captains to develop the Club’s goals
Where possible:
- Ability to attend a training camp during the school summer holidays (dates tbc)
- Level 2 coaching qualification
- RYA power boat Level 2
- Experience supporting a developing/small club.
What we offer
This role provides an opportunity to develop your coaching and leadership skills and experience, within a friendly and welcoming environment, alongside a small but passionate team of coaches and squad captains. For the right candidate, we are also happy to consider supporting your professional development, including part or full funding of further coaching/RYA courses. We may also be able to refund reasonable travel expenses (subject to agreement), and access to the rowing club boathouse/gym space outside of session times.
Gravesend Rowing Club is a small, local club with around 50 members split across our adult and junior sections, along with a strong cadre of students who return for the summer. Due to the nature of the river at Gravesend, we have a strong tradition in both fine and coastal boat rowing, alongside a developing inside ergo/gym training area. We also have ambitions to further develop the Club to improve the on-shore offer and grow our membership, making this an exciting time to join us.
