King’s College London Boat Club – Women’s Head Coach
KCLBC is a friendly club with squads for senior men and women as well as an active novice program. Our fleet is housed at the celebrated Tideway Scullers School providing a prestigious backdrop from which to train. Our seniors train in Filippis, Empachers and a new Janousek with the 1st boats racing in our Filippis.
Squad overview
The senior women’s squad provides for those who want to compete throughout the year. There is a range of experience in the squad, with some athletes having competed for GB and won HWR in their junior careers and some new seniors entering with only a year of rowing experience. At the start of the year we focus on technique before the head season to bring new seniors up to a good standard and improve on our current senior’s abilities. Our senior women have enjoyed great development and success with our current coach in the last two years, achieving some of the squad’s best results at WEHORR and BUCS, winning several local regattas and retaining their United Hospitals BUMPS headship for the 9th year in a row.
In the upcoming year, the squad’s ultimate focus is to improve and develop further from last year’s success and qualify at Henley Women’s Regatta.
The aim of our novice squad is to quickly become competent on the water and to improve enough to become competitive in their first races with the club. We want our novices to focus on team progression in order to integrate them fully into our club and the university as a whole.
About the role
Applicants must be able to work with the University schedule and be in attendance at all designated training sessions (mostly in the evenings) and competitions as agreed. The Women’s Captain will discuss at the start of the year about which days work best for you and the squad. The post holder will be expected to work with our Squad Captains, provide constructive criticism and guide athletes along a programme that will allow rowers develop their individual skills and help further the team as a whole in achieving competitive results. We need someone with a good skill set, who is committed and enthusiastic about the sport as well as willing to formulate good relationships with athletes and the club so that we can all achieve our best.
We will start recruitment for a gap year student to be an assistant coach for the Women’s Head Coach, particularly to assist in coaching the novice squad so that you can focus your attention on the 1st boat.
Duties
- To attend all water sessions in a launch (senior and novice crews)
- To attend as many competitions as possible
- To provide a recommended training programme for the senior and novice squad
- To provide an erg programme for the senior and novice squad
- To attend training camps
Preference will be given to candidates who
- Previous coaching experience, preferable with experience of coaching novice squads
- Rya Level 2 Powerboat Certification
- British Rowing Level 2 Coaching Qualification, or equivalent
- First Aid Certification
- Good knowledge of boat maintenance
- Greater consideration will be given to those who are interested in the potential for multiple years with KCLBC
