Oxford University Boat Club – Assistant Coach, Recruitment Co-ordinator and Operations

The OUBC seeks an Assistant Coach, Recruitment Co-ordinator and Operations Manager to join their high performance coaching team to deliver a rowing programme to win The Boat Race and compete at the highest level year-round.

About the Role

The Assistant Coach, Recruitment Co-ordinator and Operations Manager will report to the Head Coaches and work alongside the OUBC coaching team to deliver a rowing programme to win The Boat Race and compete at the highest level year-round.

Primary responsibilities include: daily coaching duties as assigned by the Head Coaches; crew and athlete development, including preparing crews for racing; coordinating the identification of prospective student-athletes both within and outside the university; building and maintaining relationships within Oxford University and with other universities, schools, clubs and national teams; attending appropriate regattas, and travelling to meet prospective rowers; managing additional administration and logistics associated with running a high-performance rowing programme; supporting a high-performance environment within an integrated Club across both the women’s and men’s squads.

Candidate Profile

The candidate must have the highest levels of integrity, ethical behaviour, and adherence to principles of safe sport and fair play. In addition, the ideal candidate will satisfy most, but not necessarily all, of the following skills and experiences:

  • 5+ years of high-performance rowing coaching experience across men’s and women’s crews. Able to demonstrate success as the lead coach with multiple wins at events such as Henley Royal Regatta, elite international regattas and top 10 finishes in the Head of the River Race.
  • Experience operating within a large club environment (50+ athletes) and able to demonstrate experience in organising sessions, managing the recruitment of prospective athletes, planning training camps and fixtures, maintaining equipment, race administration and arranging transport/accommodation.
  • Proficient in all aspects of high-performance sport, including training physiology, strength and conditioning, nutrition and biomechanics, rigging and psychology.
  • Comprehensive experience using the Peach telemetry system including live ‘in boat’ screens, fitting, maintaining and troubleshooting the system, managing data and providing individual and crew feedback.
    Extensive experience of the Championship Course between Putney and Mortlake in London.
  • Able to display an in-depth understanding of the Oxbridge University system and student experience.
  • The ideal candidate will have broader professional experience, working within other high-performance industries, that demonstrates a high level of administrative capability, diligence, financial competency, initiative, relationship and client management.
  •  Experience managing a team of rowing staff or volunteers.
  • RYA Level 2 Powerboat licence.
  • Full/clean UK driving licence.

Locations

OUBC crews primarily train from the Fleming Boathouse in Wallingford and at the Iffley Road Sports Centre in Oxford. The crews also spend considerable time training on the Thames in London and at the Redgrave Pinsent Rowing Lake in Caversham.
