Royal Holloway Boat Club – Squad and Sessional Coaches (Volunteer)
Royal Holloway University of London Boat Club is looking for coaches to support the club’s growing membership and development.
Who we are
Since the club’s renewal in 2022, we have looked to do things a bit differently. The club accepts members of all experience levels and looks to support the students’ time at university with a positive experience of rowing. We aim for a high retention rate throughout the year and for rowers to fall in love with the sport – like many of us have previously. Whether members wish to row socially or competitively, we look to support them in equal measures.
Development is at the heart of how we operate. In two years, the club has grown from four to 43 members and are now based in Staines. We have a healthy social group, whilst developing an increasingly competitive racing group which have included some great results and wins along the way.
We have strong ambitions and are seeking for squad and sessional coaches to join and support our growing team.
Who we are looking for
We are looking for a diverse group of coaches with coaching experience who can bring their knowledge and energy, and buy into our way of supporting members. Whether you have a focus on competitive or social rowing, we would like to hear from you. Our main sessions are Tuesdays and Fridays, 7am-9am, and Wednesdays and Sundays 1:30-4:30pm. There may be an opportunity for more coached sessions, should our growth continue. Whilst it isn’t expected that you attend every session, we are looking to ensure consistency in the coaching that the members are offered.
Roles and responsibilities will include but are not limited to:
- Responsibility for crew or squad, dependent on experience
- Work with our host boat club for the smooth operation between the two clubs
- Support the Head Coach with planning, feedback and delivery
- Support the student committee with navigating the rowing season
- Support rower and cox development
- Provide support at competitions
- Provide safe and responsible leadership.
Essential:
- British Rowing Level 2 Coaching Qualification or above
- Up to date British Rowing COACH membership
- Up to date UK Coaching Safeguarding and Protecting Children certification
- Up to date First Aid certification
Desirable:
- Understanding of rower/cox development
- Sound technical understanding of the rowing stroke
- Experience of developing a strength and conditioning programme
- RYA Powerboat Level 2 licence
- Valid driving licence
- Trailer driving qualification/trailering experience
What we can offer
Whilst this is a voluntary role, it is important for us that you feel part of an environment which values the time and effort you are willing to offer. This will include coach development opportunities, regular coaching catch-ups and support for funding towards further qualifications.
