Job Overview
Stowe School has an exciting opportunity to appoint a full time rowing coach. We are looking for team players who are equally committed to participation as well as performance in sport and have the ability to engage and motivate students with a love of sport and exercise. The role will be varied, but main focus will be to support our Head of Rowing with the development of our rowers by developing their skills, fitness and understanding of the sport.
There is an opportunity to engage in the wider aspects of life at a busy and thriving co-educational boarding school. The contract will be for two years with the opportunity to either study part time or get involved in an academic department.
The school is set in a stunning landscape and benefits from the following facilities:
On site 11 Acre Lake, approx. 450m long
On site Boathouse built in 2010
Access to Great Moore reservoir, approx. 20 minutes away from Stowe. 10 Concept 2 Ergometers.
A well-equipped performance gym.
A selection of boats (2 8’s, 3 4x-, 1 4x+, 1 4+, 5 2x, selection of 1x).

Purpose of the job:
As Rowing Coach you will be responsible for providing expertise in the training of Stowe rowers and supporting in the selection of crews. You will work with the Head of Rowing to achieve Stowe’s objectives in Rowing. You will help inspire pupils to realise their full potential in the sport.
Hours of Work:
During term time you will be required to work all School hours while the School is in session and at any other time (including during School holidays, at weekends and before and after the School’s normal starting and finishing times) as may be necessary in the reasonable opinion of your Line Manager for the proper performance of your duties.
Holidays
Subject to the section Hours of Work above, you are entitled to take all School holidays in accordance with the published dates in the School calendar. Public and Bank Holidays occurring during School terms may well be working days.
Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities:
· To coach rowing during activity time as required
· To assist the Head of Rowing in crew selection and management of, and planning of training of crews throughout the term.
· Co-ordinates with Head of Rowing to ensure the rowing programme is delivered according to the targets and goals set out by the School.
· To assist rowers with individual or small group training outside of the normal activity time such as S&C or erg sessions during lunchtimes or during the day
· To attend and support the rowers at regattas
· Help at a Rowing Camp should one be organised
Key Tasks (Rowing Coach):
- Help with the overall development of the rowing group.
- Help with running training sessions – allocating crews, rigging boats, safe behaviour by rowers, safe handling of boats, launching crews, driving the safety boat, resolving any equipment issues and breakages.
- Help with off-site team training, including transport, lists, equipment, safety boat.
- Help with competitions including allocating crews, races, timetables, lists, equipment, transport, food, trailer loading, travel and assistance with all event day activities.
- Help with development of the rowing group, including retention and recruitment.
- To have direct responsibility for coaching a rowing group as agreed.
- Implement Stowe’s water safety procedures, in accordance with British Rowing’s best practice guidelines as outlined in ‘RowSafe’.
- Help with maintenance of the boathouse facilities and all rowing boats, safety boats and equipment.
- To ensure adherence to statutory, school and sport governing body policies.

Person Specification
Essential:
- Empathy and ability to manage children according to their level of enthusiasm
- Ability to implement welfare best practice
- Ability to implement safety best practice
- Experience of coaching at recreational and competitive level
- Experience of rowing and sculling at competitive level
- Approaching rowing at Stowe as the primary objective, not secondary to other activities
- Desire to help the club achieve the competitive and recreational goals set by Stowe Sport
- Willingness to persevere in the face of adversity (with bad weather, crew & logistic issues, giving up is often the easy option.)
- Familiarity with British Rowing online systems (BROE2, ClubHub, Report a Concern, etc.)
- A clean, valid UK driving licence
- Enthusiastic and energetic
- Interested in continuous personal development
- Patience and a sense of humour
- Good professional manner and appearance
- Willingness to contribute fully to the life of a busy boarding school
Desirable:
- A degree
- Competitive achievement in coaching and rowing
- Experience of Independent and/or State boarding environment
- RYA2 Power Boat Level2
- D1 driving licence (Minibus)
- C1E single rear axle goods vehicle and twin-axle trailer
- D1E single rear axle minibus and twin-axle trailer
- Experience of minibus drving
- Experience of towing a trailer
- Practical aptitude and a willingness to fix anything that’s broken.
