Wallingford Rowing Club – Part-time (paid) Junior Coach
Wallingford Rowing Club (WRC) was founded in 1947 on the longest continuous stretch of the Upper Thames. We enjoy 20kms between locks, sharing the river with just two other clubs. We are a community club at the heart of Wallingford with a rich history and a reputation for being friendly and welcoming.
We are seeking to employ a part-time coach primarily to develop our J14 squad throughout the 2023-24 rowing year, but also to develop some of our older J15-J18 juniors. The role involves 7.5 hours on the water or in the gym, depending on the season and weather, on weekend afternoons and Friday evenings plus additional hours attending selected races. It would suit a gap-year student or beginner coach looking to gain invaluable experience en route to a coaching qualification or teaching job or gaining general management skills.
Our Junior squad is one of the most exciting and successful in the country. Led by our Directors of Rowing Katie Greves and Andy Green, in the past two years we have won multiple medals including golds at National Schools and British Rowing Junior Championships, and this year won the West End ARA Trophy at Henley Women’s Regatta for the first time. Our J14 squad is the bedrock of these achievements, and we are looking for a dynamic, inspiring individual to continue our success.
Responsibilities include:
- Teaching the J14s about safety on the water and on land
- Ensuring they train in a safe environment and that all activity is strictly within British Rowing’s and WRC’s welfare guidelines
- Teaching basic technique on the water and on ergs
- Teaching them about valuing and caring for equipment, especially boats and blades
- Improving their basic fitness and core strength
- Preparing them for races in crew boats and/or singles
- Preparing them for the next stages of the Junior programme at WRC
- Creating a strong, positive squad atmosphere
- Selecting crews for and attending certain heads and regattas
- Helping manage and coach our J15-J18 squads
You will be working under the direction of our Directors of Rowing and alongside volunteer coaches and parents. We encourage an environment where appropriate demands are placed on rowers to train, recognizing that they make choices about their level of commitment. We expect the J14 programme to be both fun and challenging. You will be DBS checked by the club.
