JIRR joy for Thames Downriver

Thames Downriver claimed a narrow victory in the battle of the British Rowing Regions on Saturday, topping the tables after a heavily weather-affected 2012 Junior Inter-Regional Regatta (JIRR).

Heavy winds at the National Water Sports Centre in Nottingham provided a stern test for competitors and organisers alike, with numerous events unable to be completed in the inhospitable conditions.

After 36 of the event’s 48 heats, a decision was taken to suspend racing – with points and medals based on the results of the heats.

In the races that were held, Thames Downriver enjoyed enough wins across the J14, J15, and J16 events to claim the Overall Victor Ludorum by just five points, with 185 to the North West region’s 180.

The North West crews did manage to claim bragging rights in the Boys events – with 85 points to Thames Downriver’s 83 – but the damage to the region’s Overall Victor Ludorum hopes had already been done by the Thames Downriver Girls crews, who cruised to the top of the Girls table with 110 points.

Thames Upriver’s crews took third place in the Boys, Girls, and Overall standings, with the Eastern Region’s crews also claiming joint-third place in the Boys table.

Results from the 2012 JIRR are now available at http://www.jirr.org/results.htm.
